Last week I told you about how I earned the PMI CPMAI™ certification.
This exam covers the project management methodology around working through AI projects.... where the normal project management lifecycles we are all used to isn't effective enough to create the business value we are looking for.
Today, I'm calling out my journey to this certification and what you need to know about earning it yourself.
Now, let's get Proactive Over Reactive!
"The Cognitive Project Management for AI (CPMAI) methodology is a vendor-neutral, iterative, and data-centric framework designed to ensure the success of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) projects."
— CPMAI Methodology Overview, Pg 1
The CPMAI™ certification stands for Certified Professional in Managing AI and it is driven by PMI's acquisition of Cognilytica in September of 2024.
Instead of the Initiating, Planning, Execution, Monitor and Controlling, and Closing that you are used to, this certification has it's own phases of:
Phase I - Business Understanding: Defining the core problem
Phase 2 - Data Understanding: Assess data quality, gaps, and accessibility
Phase 3 - Data Preparation: Clean, transform, label, and format raw data.
Phase 4 - Model Development: Select appropriate AI and machine learning algorithms
Phase 5 - Model Operationalization: Deploy the model into a live production environment
These 5 iterative phases are what guide you to success when managing an AI Project.
And nothing within them is really technical work. Instead, you have key individuals like Data Engineers, Data Scientists, and others that are trained to do that work.
The purpose of this certification is to prepare us, the Project Managers, to manage AI projects from start to finish, ensuring that the final product actually meets the needs and goals of the initiating organization.
And the exciting part is, unlike many other PMI certifications, this one does not require "X years of experience". Like the CAPM, you can take this whether new to project management of if you've been around for a while.
