Decoding the Fear Factor in PM Changes

THE PROACTIVE RISK PM WEEKLY

When Experts Create Fear

Issue #007

Date: 16 February 2026

Hey there, Reader,

I was wrapping up my day, doing a quick social media scroll in my home office before calling it a night.

That's when I saw the post.

Another "expert" tearing apart the PMBOK® 8th edition. Same person who spent months saying the 7th edition was terrible. Same person who's been claiming the PMP® might be losing value due to so many people now passing and PMI talking about a new "above the PMP® certification.

My immediate thought? "Here we go again."

Let's Get Proactive Over Reactive!

Quote of the Week

“The best example of leadership is leadership by example.”

- Jerry McClain

Story of the Week

I felt that familiar wave of annoyance wash over me. But I was tired, so I just closed the app and went to bed.

The next morning, while I was working on my PMI-RMP® course materials, it hit me.

This wasn't really about PMBOK® quality at all.

The Real Story Behind Expert Panic

Here's what I realized: When PMI makes changes, some people have to completely rebuild their business.

Think about it. If your entire revenue model is built around a book, a course, and content that's perfectly aligned to the current PMBOK®, what happens when PMI releases a new edition?

You have to rewrite everything. Your book. Your course. Your marketing. Your entire system.

And if you've built your reputation by criticizing PMI's materials, you're in an even tougher spot. You can't suddenly pivot to "actually, the new stuff is great" without looking inconsistent.

So what do you do? You double down. You say the changes are terrible. You tell people to rush and take the exam NOW before PMI "ruins everything."

You create urgency around your existing materials.

Meanwhile, as a PMI Authorized Training Partner, I've actually seen the new materials. I've been in the planning calls. I know what's coming.

And guess what? It's not scary. PMI has a logical progression from what they've been pushing with M.O.R.E. to the new CPMAI and putting these into the newly updated PMP.

They're evolving the profession, not destroying it.

How to Evaluate Expert Advice

This lesson extends way beyond PMP® exam prep.

Whether you're choosing project methodologies, evaluating new tools, or listening to industry predictions, always ask yourself:

"What does this person have to gain or lose from the advice they're giving?"

Someone whose business model depends on "the current way" has a financial incentive to resist change.....even good change.

Someone who profits from creating urgency and fear has motivation to, well, create urgency and fear.

Someone who adapts their business model to serve whatever's actually required? They have incentive to tell you the truth about what's coming.

The credentials matter. But the motivations behind the advice matter more.

This applies whether you're choosing PMP prep providers, selecting project management software, or evaluating any professional guidance where the expert has skin in the game.

The Reality About PMI's Changes

Here's the truth from someone who's actually seen the new materials and has seen the transition planning:

  • The PMP® isn't being destroyed. It's being improved.
  • The changes align with where project management is actually heading.
  • And July 9th isn't a cliff.......it's just a timeline.

If you're planning to take the exam before July, stick to your plan. If you're planning to take it after, you'll get the updated materials starting in April.

No panic required.

This week, I'm covering a topic I get asked by students to clarify quite often. I go over the hierarchy of risk appetite, tolerance, and thresholds!

PM Dad Joke of the Week

Why don't risk managers play poker?

Because they've already calculated the expected monetary value of every hand.

P.S. - Next time you see expert advice that seems designed to create panic, ask yourself:

  • Does this person profit from the status quo?
  • Are they selling something that would become obsolete with changes?
  • Do they have insider information or are they guessing?

Your career is too important for fear-based decision making.
