Last week was my anniversary. 8 proud years with my beautiful wife... and the 8-year anniversary traditional gift is Pottery, so my wife booked up for a Pottery Making Date Night.
Walking into the place, seeing all the clay, and the spinning discs that we would have to use our hands to mold some form of pottery.....
I knew I was in for an experience.
See, I'm not artistic.
But, I jumped in and had some fun... and while reflected, thought about a great project management leadership lesson we all need to remember to use!
Now, let's get Proactive Over Reactive!
"Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things."
—Peter F. Drucker
I didn't know what I was doing.
The instructor walked us step by step through the process.
The first time, I followed her step by step the entire way, but on the second piece, I got impatient, thought I could move along faster while she helped the other people in the room.
I was moving along, but I forgot an extremely important step... keeping the clay wet.
And I destroyed what I was working on.
I walked away from that art gallery with one big lesson... I highly appreciate people who have the patience and skill to work those Potter's Wheels.
As project managers, we need to appreciate our team members. They have the skills, the training, the background, and the overall knowledge to get the work done.
We might have some idea of how to do the work and maybe even have a background in it. But, for the project, they are the SME, they are the one doing the work... and we need to trust them.
And we cannot move ahead without them. Even if we think we are ready.
If we do, we will end up like my wannabe bowl..... destroyed!
